Often came to therapy, people ask themselves this question: "How to find a psychologist, the same?". The one, perhaps, will not. Everyone is different, psychologists are people too, therefore, each psychologist will carry in addition to psychological knowledge their character, their habits, etc., etc., it is likely that each psychologist you can find something that will be appropriate for you and what you will repel. There can be two extremes. First. In search of "that", people jump from one specialist to the next, finding in each something that does not suit him. The second client grabs the specialist, tolerate some frustration, but not go away. The reasons can be many. Not worth it to "stick" the specialist only because he gathered 100500 likes and followers, or because it was recommended by your good friend whom you respect. What is good for someone may be bad for you. The main should be a sense of inner satisfaction and the feeling that "process" is. If the psychologist is adequate, eco-friendly in relation to you, does it matter what approach he works and in what paradigm believes?

And yet, the question remains open, how to find a psychologist who will come to you. For this I propose to consider several criteria, or "markers" on which to rely when choosing a psychologist.

  • Price. the Market of psychological services is very wide. Sentences ranging from a one-time consultation, ending with the sales of the entire pass ("refer a friend and receive a solution to one problem free" *joke*). Accordingly, the price range is also very wide. The average cost of a one-time consultation (per hour) equal to 3 000 R. lower limit starts from 1 500, upper - ... there is no limit to perfection, as they say. You should answer the question (honestly) yourself how much you are willing to pay for one counseling. It is desirable that this answer was not so much from the heart as from the evaluation of your real financial possibilities. Defined? Well, you can move on to the next criterion.
  • Age psychologist. Now psychological counselling deals with a lot of people. Sooo many people. There is no denying the fact that the profession is younger. Increasingly, in social networks, you can stumble upon announcement of the private practice of a young graduate or a student of psychological faculty. There is nothing wrong or bad. Because young does not mean stupid or immature. Don't want you consulted a psychologist who is younger than you? The market of psychological services is full of suggestions from people of different ages. Here it is also worth to yourself to answer the following questions: "what is Important is whether I do the age of the psychologist?"; "If I feel comfortable will work with a psychologist that age?"; "What is the age of psychologist is most appropriate for me?". Often, aspiring psychologists, start with lower price range (see paragraph 1). For some it can be very on hand.
  • Education psychologist. Will in this matter sharp, but I will say that for very long and to study persistently and to be a bad psychologist. Not always the one who has many diplomas and certificates that can help you. Then, you know, there is no guarantee at all (unfortunately). What else would you navigate, if not education? Education definitely plays a big role. Yes, indeed, there is a difference, studied whether the specialist psychology remotely at the University with a questionable name or in the "trusted" College. However, no matter how much people ate, it's how much he has digested (sorry for such a naive comparison). It is also important to divide psychologists-practitioners and psychologists-academics. Psychologist, academician can be a good practitioner and Vice versa. But if on the main page of the psychologist is talking more and more about his publications and presentations at conferences, not on the methods and priorities in practice, there is a suspicion, does not compensate for this specialist the lack of practice in psychological counseling achievements in the scientific field? And even here to answer the questions: "is it Important to me that the psychologist had a scientific degree?"; "Can I trust the person who finished one course and does not have basic psychological education?"; "What is more important to me: education psychologist or testimonials from its customers?".
  • Beliefs of the psychologist. It is slippery enough moment. Undoubtedly, every Mature person has their own beliefs and priorities. Increasingly, on the personal pages of psychologists can meet such phrases as "LGBT-friendly", "poly-friendly", etc. What does that mean? This means that the psychologist will work with you regardless of your gender, sexual orientation and political beliefs. If you know that your beliefs differ from the beliefs of the majority of your friends, it is necessary to specify how the psychologist will do it. Fortunately, now you can not ask about it directly, it is enough to carefully examine the website of the specialist. Of course, it is unlikely that the psychologist will write openly about their sexual orientation, religion and other things. But, as a rule, many psychologists point to the pages that they work regardless of the beliefs of the client. By the way, it can also become a kind of "marker" maturity and awareness of the psychologist.
  • Approach in which the psychologist works. Here are four of the moment. First, approaches to psychological counseling, not a lot less than the psychologists. Second, there is no universal approach for all ailments of the human soul (probably this is the main reason why so many approaches). Thirdly, about the different approaches in psychology written so many that now even no longer customary to write (*semi-joke*). In the fourth, the fifth and last on my list of "markers" that you should look for when choosing a psychologist. Why? Because each approach involves a number of "tools" with which the psychologist operates. But this is internal kitchen of psychologists. I don't want to say that this is the case only psychologists and clients do not belong there, no. But I honestly believe that it's not the tool or the approach in the specialist, and how it suits you. Psychologist, plunging into the profession, determined direction in which it will work. Unfortunately, often between psychologists of different approaches can lead to misunderstanding or even a mini-cold war. And all this leads to the fact that the tool overlaps the target or does it replaces. A goal of psychotherapy is one – to make man better, to feel happier, closer to himself. So if you see a radical psychoanalyst (nothing personal), which is what the case says about the uniqueness and faithfulness of his approach, run. Because for a psychologist the goal is not to do well for you, and make you recognize the value of his approach. And here it is not about you, and about him. Of course, every Sandpiper will praise the bog. And this is quite normal, when the psychologist speaks openly about the way in which it works. Should you eventually understand what you're dealing with. The psychologist, whose goal is the welfare of the client, not validation of his methods in efficiency will make a great accent in your profile.
  • so, with that, I'll stop. Such "markers" can be very, very much. Let them discuss the criteria to be a kind of reminder that will help you to find your specialist. The most important thing in choosing a psychologist to rely on his popularity and the reviews of other people or anything else and your subjective experience that you have when communicating with a particular technician.
