How to find "their" expert?

Today I want to share with you simple instructions in 5 steps how to find your coach, psychologist or psychotherapist.

Slightly adapted, instruction can be applied to search for professionals from other fields.

If you're short on time - go to the very end of the text - in two sentences written in the essence.

And for those who chose to read the unabridged version is begin.

Step 1: write down in writing your question

What do you want? How to solve the issue? What will a "good result"? What support/help would you like to get from a specialist? At this point it is important to transfer thoughts from head to paper. In the form in which they are on the inside. Your questions and expectations at this point in time.

Step 2: think about how could you help + what are the criteria of the specialist is important for you

Sure if the issue is important, once you tried to find the answer yourself: read books, watched videos on YouTube, studying blogs of interesting people. Who were the experts that have caught your attention? What they directions? They are psychologists? If Yes - do any schools and trends of psychotherapy? If not (that too maybe) they're the tax consultants, mentors, career counselors? Remember - you can help to solve your question the specialists of different directions, but it is important to choose what you closer, clearer and, therefore, quickly lead to the goal, because time will not be spent for the establishment of "one" language.

Step 3: make a Long list

To compile a list of "candidates" suggest to use multiple sources:

  • Common sites where they post profiles several schools (Psy-Practce, Self-B17)
  • Sites of professional associations (in almost all associations, there are tabs with the experts many associations have qualification requirements for entry, check the certificates, so for you it may be a plus). But choose the Association with history and reputation.
  • Facebook, Instagram, YouTube - keyword search. At this stage, trust your instincts. Everyone who liked the put down to assess further.

Step 4: create Short-list

This is the most important stage, it is most of the time. A few recommendations:

  • look for interested people! Look for those who are interested in your topic.
  • pay attention to education (where studied, from whom, how long, how often training takes place, from whom, in what areas)
  • ask, did personal therapy (what school, how long)
  • ask whether supervision (how often, who)
  • apply the "criteria" indicated in item 2

Passion and professional interest is a guarantee that a specialist in your subject will know all the latest research, trends, approaches, best practices, and you'll save time because he will offer the best solution.

private therapy for coach, psychologist and psychotherapist is not only the solution to "their" requests, is an opportunity to explore their limits, their peculiarities of character and temperament, in order for the customer to be as neutral and effective.

Supervision is the criterion standards in the work because of the feedback from more experienced colleagues - growth story. Our mind and the mechanisms of mental protection is designed so that using only "other" we see ourselves.

I would also recommend to make yourself a short list of 3-5 issues of importance to you that you ask by phone before coming to the 1st meeting - structuring your conversations will allow you to compare and choose the one who will start.

Step 5: take action!

the Most important point. Sometimes because of our own perfectionism and desire to find the "best of the best" we just let the most important - time. Don't delay, just try. Any step, any meeting to push you in resolving your issue.

Even if you happen so that you will be taken to a completely horrible... at least you speak your question again, as a maximum - will have a list of criteria for "their" formed in practice. And sometimes the decision to change the coach, psychologist or therapist is a huge step forward. Today man has decided that you will not continue therapy with a specialist that he doesn't like, and tomorrow he will understand that he does not want to take any more communication in the company that burns through its internal resources and... decides to move on and look for "their". And so gradually will change his life.

In the end I would like to answer one question that is often asked of me: do I need to look for a psychologist/coach with a "like" on your story⁉
My answer is no. Looking for someone who is interested in and works with your theme.

What are the disadvantages of a psychologist with "your" story?

If the theme is not developed, then it will go from a neutral position in "a", this is your efficiency to decline. If the theme is elaborated and the question is not the subject of his interests - he simply is "not interested" in the session and this will also lower efficiency. Item only works with coaches, psychologists and psychotherapists, if you are looking for a mentor or expert - then you just need a person "from the topic", with its own expertise.

I wanted to write short clear instructions, it turned out not very short though wrote only the most basic. I hope you thought it was useful and some of the items you take to them for service.

If you cut, then I would be left in the user two points:

(1) trust your intuition (you can sometimes choose someone who you like the photo, just as he wrote about himself in the questionnaire or whatever their personal criteria)

(2) function, sometimes the lost time is worse what advice do not have "the best".
